VIRTUAL LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs) provide flexible learning. Experience has shown that, flexible learning is about providing students with options as to how, where and when they learn (Module 7: Resources Notes). The benefit of using VLEs include the fact that, students get exposed to technology as well as the e-environment at the early stage of their educational journey before they transit to higher levels (colleges, universities and also work) where the essence of technology is almost all-or-none. The drawback of virtual spaces is that, just as noted in the Indigenous Culture and Globalization (2013) students from marginalized communities may not have access to computers, internet and technology-based devices. The benefits of VLEs however, outweigh the negatives
Tools for flexible learning environment and VLEs includes: Learning Management Systems (LMSs), Web Conferencing, Screencasting, Course Authoring, Open Educational Resources (OERs). This module will focus on showcasing LMSs. I am using HAIKU Learning Management System to manage my grade 11 Media Studies course and I would like to share this website with you. HERE is my website.
There are many tools in Haiku that can be used to make the learning management system rich in content for students. Some of these tools and content are only assessible to students registered in the course and so, you may not be able to see it if you are not registered in my course. These tools includes: Assesment tool, Email and Dropbox tool. The screenshots below exemplify these tools and content:
